The Allendale Co-operative Society Ltd, in the centre of the town, installed a generator following the impact of Storm Arwen on the community so it could support residents in future weather incidents.
Storm Eowyn hit the UK on January 24, causing power cuts and uprooting trees across Northumberland.
Allendale’s independent Society celebrated its 150th anniversary last year and has been owned and run by local people in the village since 1874.

Kirstin Robinson, company secretary at the Allendale Co-op, said after Storm Arwen, the business was ‘disappointed’ they couldn’t offer more support to residents.
“We lost our power and then we couldn’t open on the Sunday when people needed us.
“The Board of Directors decided to purchase a generator so when this storm came round, we were prepared and able to keep on going. People came in and had flasks filled up and phones charged.”
The generator activates when there is a power cut and allows the tills to keep operating as well as the freezers, ensuring no food is wasted.
